How you breathe shapes how you sleep, how you grow, and how you age. Most general dentists do not look at the mouth this way. We do.

What airway-aware dentistry adds to your exam

A different lens

We screen for the patterns that drive snoring, grinding, daytime fatigue, and headaches, patterns most general dentists are not trained to see.

Visible evidence

Worn teeth, scalloped tongue, narrow palate, recurrent canker sores, these are the body's record of long-term airway compromise. We document and explain.

Pediatric runway

Children's jaws and airways grow together. Catching mouth breathing or palate narrowing at age five is easier and cheaper than addressing adult OSA at fifty.

Network of care

Diagnosis sits with sleep physicians and ENTs. We coordinate the referral, deliver the dental piece (oral appliance, expansion), and stay in the loop on follow-up.

Where airway dentistry shows up in practice

Three patient stories cover the majority of airway dentistry at Dental Excellence.

Adult Sleep & Snoring

Oral appliance therapy for diagnosed sleep apnea, or as a CPAP-intolerant alternative. Pairs with sleep-MD coordination.

TMJ & Bite Collapse

Many TMJ cases are airway cases in disguise. Treating the breathing issue often resolves the joint symptoms.

Pediatric Growth Guidance

Early evaluation of palate width, tongue tie, mouth breathing, and bite. Myofunctional therapy and palate expansion when indicated.

Common airway-dentistry questions

What is airway dentistry?
Airway dentistry is the clinical practice of evaluating the mouth as part of the upper airway, the tongue, palate, jaw position, and bite all influence how a patient breathes, sleeps, and grows. Trained dentists read the visible signs (worn teeth, scalloped tongue, narrow arches, mouth breathing) and connect them to systemic conditions like sleep apnea, TMJ, headaches, and chronic fatigue.
How is airway dentistry different from regular dentistry?
A regular dental exam screens for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. An airway-aware exam adds: tongue position and posture, palate width, jaw range of motion, breathing pattern, sleep history, and bite collapse. The findings are often the earliest evidence of sleep-disordered breathing, sometimes years before a sleep study would confirm it.
Why does airway matter for kids?
Children's faces, jaws, and airways grow together. Mouth breathing, narrow palate, or persistent thumb-sucking can shape a face that's set up for adult sleep apnea, TMJ, and orthodontic problems. Early identification, by age four or five, gives the simplest, lowest-cost interventions a chance to work.
What is AAOSH?
The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health is the international body that trains dentists in airway-aware, whole-body dentistry. AAOSH membership means a dentist has invested in continuing education on the connections between oral health, sleep, inflammation, and systemic disease. Dr. LaDuque is a member.
What does an airway evaluation cost?
A standard new-patient exam at Dental Excellence already includes airway-aware evaluation, no extra charge. If treatment is indicated (oral appliance, palate expansion, myofunctional therapy referral), each is quoted separately and verified against your insurance benefits before scheduling.
Do I need a sleep study?
For diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, yes, a medical sleep study (in-lab or home test) is required before fitting an oral appliance. For airway evaluation in general, no, that's part of every exam. We coordinate the sleep study referral when one is indicated.
Can airway dentistry help my TMJ pain?
Often, yes. Many TMJ cases are driven by airway compromise, the body clenches at night to keep the airway open, and the jaw joint pays the price. Treating the underlying breathing issue frequently relieves the joint symptoms more effectively than a night guard alone.
