A daily discipline

The Joy Practice

Joy is not a feeling that visits. It is a practice that holds. The body knows the difference, and so does the mouth.

By Dr. Stephen LaDuque, DDS ยท Dental Excellence Stephenville ยท 2025-09-15

Stress wears down teeth. Worry shows up in the jaw. Resentment finds the back of the neck. We see the visible record in the dental chair every week.

A joy practice is small and consistent. Five minutes of laughter. A meal that was made on purpose. A walk that was for nothing. These are the things that protect the body from the slow erosion of low-grade stress.

  • Notice three things daily that brought you genuine joy. Write them down.
  • Eat one meal a week with people you love, slowly.
  • Walk without a destination once a week.
  • Laugh on purpose, call the friend who makes you laugh.
  • Sleep early enough to wake up rested. Joy is harder to access when tired.

Takeaway

Joy is a daily discipline. The body remembers it.
